The fine work performed by Argentinian coach Helenio Herrrera in Portugal at Belenenses caught the eye of FC Barcelona who duly appointed him as first team coach in the spring of 1958 as successor to Domingo Balmanya. His goal was simple: match then surpass European champions Real Madrid domestically and Herrera delivered the necessary rapid and stunning improvement to ensure Barcelona swept all in front of them over the course of the 1958-59 season.
